Important info for Communication Students

Are you taking Communication Studies Honors, or a double honor in Communication Studies and something else? If so... read on

Communication Studies has launched a NEW non-streamed program for students to take. All incoming students in September 2007 will be required to take the new program (they won't have streams anymore). However, EXISTING students (students PRIOR to Sept 2007) who are going into 2nd, 3rd, 4th year have the option of staying in their existing program (with streams) OR moving over to the new program.

A few notes:
  • Switching to the new program is not mandatory
  • All the courses you took in first year, second year, etc. are all applied to the new program and fit into the requirements (you don't need to retake courses you already took, and all courses you took still count)
Advantages:
  • More course selection. You will be able to pick from a larger array of classes. With the streamed program you could only select from courses within your stream (ex: Mass Communications). With the new program you can pick from classes that were part of all the other streams. Everything becomes merged.
  • You get more flexability. There are different required courses, and some of the courses required in the streams program are no longer required in the new one.
Disadvantages:
  • Depending on what classes you took, you need to make a decision whether or not the new program is an advantage to you. If you took all the required courses already... then some of those may end up becoming electives since they may no longer be required in the new program.
WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?

Visit the course calendar to view the requirements:

How do I make the switch?
When you go to SOLAR the first screen you see will be one that lets you decide which program you want to continue in (streams or non-streams). Click your choice. Note: This won't appear by itself. You will need to speak to an academic advisor and they will add the option of switching out to SOLAR for you.

What if I don't want to switch?
Switching is optional. If you want to remain in your streamed communication program, then that is fine! Simply select that option and continue picking classes with the same requirements you used last year.

Dont see the option in SOLAR or NEED HELP?
Book an appointment with an academic councilor at the Humanities office.
