Innovations in Civil Engineering?
So, is civil engineering really set in stone? I mean when I look at Materials Engineering or Chemical Engineering, I can feel that there are still many advances necessary to be made, and that I can make something completely revolutionary if I go into the field.

But, how does Civil Engineering fare in this sense? I feel like Civil Engineering is set in stone, and everything that can be known about structure and mechanics has already been known, and nothing new is left to be found rather than learning what already is. How do you guys feel?

I am considering Civil, but am thrown back slightly because I cant see the vision going forward. What are some of the challenges civil engineers face that cannot be solved with what we know now? I am not talking about building castles in the air however..

Actually, I have narrowed down to Chem Eng and Mtls Eng based on everyone's suggestions. I am just curious to make an informed decision as it will be what I will do for the rest of my life.

I dont really like "electronic" stuff, so am steering far away from Eng Phys

Do you know how to build things on the moon?

No? Well there you go.

Now close the thread.

There are a few new things going on in civil but it depends on what you are interested in. Off the top of my head, some Mac professors are doing research in earthquake engineering so buildings are less damaged and could potentially continue being used after very major earthquakes. There is another looking at more high tech ways to make construction sites safer and more efficient. There are others doing research in different fields but most of the things aren't quite as headline grabbing stuff as other fields.

"So, decided to go ahead and pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering after a lot of thoughts. The decision is final, as of right now at least, thanks for the input everyone. Chem Eng just has 3 labs in the straight chem eng program in the whole freaking 4 years, 2I03, 3L02 and 4L02.., just 3 labs, lol... 1aa3 doesnt count, math 2z03,2zc3 doesnt count for labs.."

Well the "final" decision you made in your chem eng thread lasted less than 3 days apparently..
