When I did it as a TA, I got paid the same rate as when I was actually TAing, plus paid for 1 hour before the exam to account for orientation/instructions and set-up. I don't think I got paid poorly as a TA, and invigilating was a lot easier and on a volunteer basis (not all TAs were required to invigilate, since they had more TAs than were needed to cover all of the rooms).
So, if you do it as a TA, I think it's a pretty good deal, even if it's required as part of your TA contract.
