July 1st is Canada Day! Not only does this mean a day away from your summer job (and classes) but also one amazing day filled with celebration! Bust out your red and whites and prepare to shout EH!! On Canada Day, we're celebrating the union of the British colonies of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec into a federation on July 1st, 1867. Over the years Canada continued to grow into the country that it is today. It has become more and more independent of its ties to colonial status. In 1982 with the Constitution Act, the final ties with all British Parliament were finally shed. Canada Day is a time to celebrate all of our history and mark the beginning of the formation of this country 141 years ago.
On this day, we will also commemorate the 400th anniversary of Quebec when Samuel de Champlain landed and founded Québec City in 1608. You can find more information about Samuel de Champlain here.
Canada Day is filled with many public events, such as parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, air and maritime shows, fireworks, or free musical concerts occurring all across the country. If you are going to be in the GTA for Canada day, there are lots of things for you to do. If you would like more information, check out the sites for the cities of Hamilton, Oakville, Toronto and London.
Canada Day just isn't Canada Day without a fun YouTube video!
