Just Wondering about the PNB program (Social Science)
I'm just a grade 11 student and next year as I am going into grade 12 I am thinking of applying to McMaster, and I have a question I would like to ask. I want to enter the social sciences program, but more specifically, I am very interested in the Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour (PNB) B.A program, I just wanted to know if applying towards this program at your school, if I need to take grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF 4U0), I am currently taking grade 11 functions (MCR 3U0) and my mark at the moment is not looking very well, so ultimately I just want to know if I need to continue to take math next year or if I can enter this program with just a grade 11 functions background, and also is it true that by going to summer school for two weeks to improves one's mark look bad towards a university application?

Another question to you is that in your opinion do you believe that with my "not so high" math average should take grade 12 advanced function (which by taking this class may lower my overall average thus not meeting the academic requirement) or should I wait until my first year and take the MATH 1K03? (that saying if I get accepted)

Another question is that how important is math for this course and will it be placing a lot of emphasis on it

Also, will I need to take math for all 4 years of university?

BTW I am getting above 80s in all my other classes

it says there you don't need it for BA but you have to take equivalent courses in first year...i would recommend just taking it while your in high school, no point blowing away 600 bucks just to learn high school math. also your going to have to take stat courses in psych, other than that there are no other math courses you have to take

By the looks of it, you'll have to take an additional Calculus ("one of 1A03, 1LS3, or 1M03") on top of 1K03.

EDIT: By reading further into note 2, it looks as though if you don't take Grade 12 Advanced Functions, you have to have a B- in 1K03 in order to go onto 1M03/1LS3/1A03, and if you don't achieve that then you have to take 1F03 before going onto one of those three. If it's doable, it seems as though it would make more sense to just work hard on your Math courses in high school instead of paying for the courses here. Someone correct me if I'm reading that incorrectly.

Its actually a difficult question to answer.. if you want to guarantee you get accepted to Mac, don't take it, and just focus on getting your required courses high, and have HIGH highschool average (if possible). If you know you'll do decently well mark-wise 80+ average, then take grade 12 calculus, and as much summer school as possible.

Courses at mac cost anywhere between 500-800$, so you're gonna want to take as many cheap courses as you can (free in hs, cheap summer school). Also, its better to learn things right now, rather than when your brain is older.

tldr: No math if you're not for sure gonna get 80+ average, math and other courses if you're thinking long term

thanks for the reply but the reason y i'm debating whether to take math now or not is because i'm afraid that my math mark would lower my overall average and will not look towards an application. But if i don't take it my average will be high and if i get accepted I can then worry about my math

It sounds like you've answered your own question. If you think it's going to lower your average to the point that you won't even get accepted, then it's probably best to take it if you end up coming here.

EDIT: You should keep in mind that that program, which you apply to at the end of first year, has limited enrollment. If you're putting off these courses to take in university, it's important to note that your mark in the replacement courses do count in your grade calculation that determines whether or not you get into that program. So in reality, you're going to have to work hard in either the high school courses or the replacement courses to get into the program. It makes more sense (to me at least) to secure your spot in the university (by not taking courses you feel you'll do poorly in) and then go from there. That way, at least you've been accepted.

Thanks again I guess part of me already knew all this, but was trying to figure out a way to find a loophole which would allow me to potentially end up at McMaster without taking grade 12 advanced functions

I don't blame you, I'm not a Math fan myself. Good luck with grade 12!
