KIN 4AA3 is Applied Biomechanics
So I just finished this course and have to say that it has by far been one of my favourites.
After learning the calculations related to biomechanics from KIN 2A03 and KIN 3A03 (prereqs) this course examines the different areas in which biomechanical thinking can be applied. Topics covered included
Biomechanics in the work industry (Ergonomics)
Myoelectric stimulation
Rehabilitation
Othortics and prosthetics
Forensics
Resistance training
Can Humans voluntary elicit MVC?
Sports Equipment
Animated films
Computer games/controllers
It was instructed by Dr.Dowling-- insanely smart man, but not the most organized. If I had one complaint about the course it would be the difficulty in taking notes as he speaks with the aid of slides but basically covers what the slides say so he doesnt let you copy it down-- yet he gets very excited about what hes talkng about and sometimes the notes you end up with arent the most clear. He will clarify things if you ask though.
He is very enthusiastic so its hard not to enjoy yourself in the class. He will also give you marks if youre on the right track with an idea and is very fair on his testing.
There break down was like this:
One midterm worth 25%
a project worth 40%- split into two projects 10% and 30%
Final worth 35%
-- the final was very good in the sense that it wasnt required to answer every question it was spit into a mandatory 10mark question followed by 40 marks that came out of answering 8 /15 possible questions.
The projects:
10%-- an analysis of JFK assasination video applying biomechanics without any outside research
30% topic of your choice- "consulting report" focusing on a topic and looking at both sides of the issue with a bio mechanical focus -- mine was examining the effectiveness of mouth guards in concussion reduction.
He was VERYYY flexible about the due dates.. basically as long as he got it by the end of the term you were good.. the big project is a term long project so that was due the last day of class and erturned to you at the exam.. the 10% wwas due before this because it was supposed to be a way to test the waters with your skills and recieve feedback.
There are NO calculations in this course, you need to understand general kinetics and kinematics but will have learned these concepts in the prereq courses for this course. As long as you study and take good notes you will do well.
