Learn about the Secure key control systems - event today!

Secure key control systems have keys stored in a computerized cabinet which can only be accessed by authorized individuals. Authorized individuals obtain access to the keys through a finger scan. The biometric data required to do this is pre-obtained at the beginning of the year.

Keys are monitored and have locking mechanisms when inside the box and can be returned anywhere in the box. When the cabinet is opened, individuals only have access to the ONE key to which they are assigned.

COME TO LEARN MORE about the key control / biometric reader system. Ask your questions and express your opinions/concers. This will help you with the online survey that is coming later in the month ABOUT THE SYSTEM.

There are two info sessions:
1. Monday 5:30-6:30PM (LES PRINCE CONFERENCE ROOM)
2. Tuesday 5:30-6:30PM (LES PRINCE CONFERENCE ROOM)

There will also be FREE PIZZA AND POP.

Come out. Get informed. Be the voice of those living on-campus next year.

So at $8000 / month that's a minimum of $96,000 per year. If we assume the cost overruns are on the same order as the wonderfully advanced automated parking system then its safe to double that number to $200,000 per year.

With a maximum of 4000 students in residence this means an the cost is likely an extra $50 per student in residence. The current lock out fee schedule is:

http://housing.mcmaster.ca/Building_Services/keys.html
Your first lock out key is free of charge.
Lock out 2 & 3 = $3
Lock out 4 & 5 = $5
Lock out 6 & 7 = $10
Lock out 8 & 9 = $15
Lock out 10 & following = $20

So if you plan on locking yourself out more than 9 times per year you may be saving money, otherwise why change a system that appears to work fine ? Its not like this system eliminates keys, you still need a key for your door. You can also bet that there will be problems implementing the system despite what the vendor claims (again see the parking gate fiasco).

If Housing and Conference services has extra money lying around, perhaps they could use it to reduce residence rates, contribute to bursaries or increase the meager pay of CAs rather than buying minimally useful but very expensive tech toys.

There is a reason for this.

McMaster fridges have the lowest energy requirement found anywhere. They are certified with Platinum Seals from Energy Star, which is an international standard for energy efficient products. Not only that, all the fridges provided meet strict Environmental Green standard which ensure the product from all stages in the life cycle to be friendly to mother Earth.

If everyone were to be allow to bring their own fridges, they might not meet the same standard and would caused a negative effect to energy usage and McMaster's overall dedication to be environmentally friendly.

Why don't they just install biometric readers on the door itself?

It's both a biometric reader on the entrances to the building (all entrances) and on this key box.

Surveys went out today to all current residence students regarding this system. If you live in res, please fill it out. We need as many student opinions as possible if we want a strong voice on this issue one way or the other.

If you wouldn't want this in the building you were living in / wouldn't want this to be how your student fees are used, then don't just let it happen to other students.

As I saw a display pic say about voting in the coming election, if you don't express your opinion, you lose the right to complain if things don't turn out the way you would have wanted them to. The IRC is getting the results of these surveys as well, and we will listen to and fight for your opinions, so don't feel like it's just a meaningless survey.

I found this idea a little silly, but I think that once the uni gets an idea, it's hard to convince them NOT to do it...
