Hm, I actually disagree with the previous poster. I really enjoyed this class but I also really like physics and liked learning interesting real life applications. Dr. Dowling was very helpful in office hours and in Friday classes he went over examples and questions that students were confused about, so while the problem sets had (only) the final answer, he was very willing to show all his steps if need be. Maybe I found this course easy/enjoyable because I am pretty comfortable with the physics already, but I suppose I can see why it might have been more difficult for someone who isn't and needs a more complete explanation of how to answer various types of questions.
That being said, to answer the OPs original question, you will be 100% fine taking kin at the same time. You really don't need that background information at all. Good luck in the course!
