Well he came to donate/loan his historic Map Collection(about the Gulf) to the McMaster Art Museum. He apparently is a huge collector of historic maps of all things. Plus he also is the head of Islamic education foundation of some sort that recently gave funding to the religious study program at Mac or something of that sort.

He donated money for a Chair of Global Islam (Daily News article), and also worked with Mac to improve the Health Sciences department at the University of Sharjah

It's the same thing Anamaria mentioned but that article misses one key detail: http://dailynews.mcmaster.ca /story.cfm?id=6478

Alongside that Author/Historian the VIP is the Sultan/Ruler of Sharjah(A Emirate part of UAE; Like for example Dubai is another province of UAE; each province is ruled by a Sultan) who has loaned the map collection to the McMaster Art Museum. Peter George was there as well.

I was actually surprised there was such low key security; Sultan's when going to less safe countries actually commonly travel with a big entourage of heavily armed guards and Armoured SUV's/Sedans.

I did actually go to the event because the MSU requested the SRA attend because they had very low student attendance(It was mostly older people); It was informative, until it turned into a political debate!

My guess it that the ...low fussiness was on purpose, to avoid swithching the focus from the maps to the Sultan. IMO he would not have spoken at all if not for the questioning guy. I've appreciated his diplomacy when he went up to speak.

Interesting lecture and the maps are fascinating.

that doesn't explain why the limo was parked outside the nuclear research building the day before. Anyone knows what famous person was at this building?

Man, CHCH news is always at mac lol I've walked by while they were filming so I'm pretty sure I've been on TV a couple times in the background. XD I never know why they're here though, other than when they were here for the strike.

It's too bad more people didn't attend, it was interesting - I didn't see it advertised in the student centre or anything though, I just got a facebook message about it randomly a few days ago.

I didn't really understand what that guy at the end was asking, it sounded to me like the sultan had answered his question - that there's different names for it depending on the politics going on at the time (like the British carrying two different maps lol)

I was there too. It looked to me like he had a few bodyguards sitting beside him in Conn Hall.

There were also several McMaster Constables there keeping an eye on things. Who knows campus police has ppl in plain clothes so they could have been there and no one would know.

There are- I've seen people get arrested by them. On the arts quad and in the residence areas a few years ago.

It makes sense that they would-there's like 25000 people at mac so they can prby catch a bunch of stuff not wearing uniforms- illegal drinking and possibly drugs and stuff.
