Ok...so for our first assignment, our first question is regarding finding how many segments are in words. But I have no idea what a segment is, I tried looking for it in the textbook but I don't understand their explanation. So I was wondering, could anyone explain to me what a segment is?

A segment is the "phone". Basically, one symbol out of the IPA alphabet type thing. For example, "at" has the IPA symbols: æt. Therefore, æ & t makes "at" have 2 segments.
