				Mac Compatibilities

Hey everyone so i just bought a mac, will there be any compatibility issues? For example, will i be able to open and work with any files that the profs give out?? Is the school's printer compatible with a mac??

Also, im taking comp sci next yr, is a mac good for programming like java or adobe and all that stuff??

I can't speak for all files, because I don't know all of the file types professors use to hand out stuff to their students/classes, but I'm sure there is a Mac compatible program to open it up. I never used the school's printer with my Mac, so I can't help you there. What CS course are you taking next year? You could use Eclipse or another IDE on your Mac with no problems..though I haven't heard of programming in Adobe.

Bootcamp is also another viable option, esp. with Windows 8 being released in October.

The only time I've ever had a problem with using OS X or Linux on my MacBook was for the stats course you take in second year CS (Stats 3Y03), which requires software that AFAIK only is available for Windows. I just ran Windows in a VM for that program when needed. Other than that, OS X should be perfectly fine.

You should be fine, 99% of documents are compatible. The only annoying this at the start is making sure you save the documents as word files if you use iWork .

Also programming is no problem. I used to me in Computer engineering at Sheridan for a year and programmed in Java and C++. I used NetBeans as my IDE and it was awesome.

What VM software did you use? I'll have to download one and install XP on it..

EDIT:

I'll be trying VirtualBox .

If you want 3D acceleration, get VMWare Fusion. It's easy to torrent and looks really nice in OS X.

I don't think I'll need 3D acceleration for a Stats course's program but thanks for the suggestion.

But since Windows 8 is crap, the OP might as well use Boot Camp to dual boot with Windows 7. (That's what I do.)
