Math 1m03/1a03/1aa3
Hi,

I'm a first year student in Business, and I want to switch into Computer Science for next year, but I looked at the mandatory courses and it says that I need MATH 1A03 and 1AA3 (as well as 1B03).

My issue is that I'm taking MATH 1M03 right now, and with this, I cannot take MATH 1A03 if I achieve a B- or higher. I am currently getting a B+, but I do not feel comfortable taking MATH 1AA3 right away, and skipping 1A03. I know there are quite a few things in 1A03 that I have not learned in 1M03, and it just doesn't make much sense because I'll be "building" on things from 1A03 that I never even learnt...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I think he's asking what he should do to prepare for MATH 1AA3 because he does not think that MATH 1M03 is preparing him enough.

If that is the case, why don't you take a look at the 1A03 textbook to see what you've missed. Or, you could purposely do badly on the exam so that you're eligible to take MATH 1A03.

uhm if you can do basic integration then you should be able to do math 1aa3. its a lot of new stuff and much of what is used in 1a03 isnt used in 1aa3

Yeah I heard not much of it is similar, but I don't want to go into the class at a disadvantage. I guess the other option is to intentionally bomb my 1M03 final exam to lower my mark.

Do you think the APO can let me into the course even though I have this mark? Or are they going to tell me to (i) Skip 1A03 or (ii) Bomb the 1M03 final

Why don't you just get the best grade you can in 1M03 and then audit 1A03? You can either unofficially or officially audit it, but I think if you officially audit it you need to pay. If it's unofficial, you just go to the lectures and provided there is space (ie you aren't taking the seat from someone registered in the course) you can catch up on the material you missed that way.

Really though, you should be able to teach yourself the stuff you missed from 1A03 while taking 1AA3...there isn't that much that you're missing that will be needed in 1AA3, maybe 3-4 concepts at most, and they're not hard ones.

If you intentionally bomb the exam it'll bring down your average for the rest of your time here at Mac. And it really won't look good if you want to switch programs.

a) Don't bomb it; the faculty of science will most likely allow you to redo 1A03 if its for an upgrade (I know they allow it for failed courses)

b) Yeah, you should take 1A03, just to get a feel for some of the more complicated concepts but its not necessarily needed. Easy to reteach yourself

c)I'm currently taking math 1AA3. Considering I'm in first year commerce atm, I've asked my commerce friends about the 1M03 course and what I'm missing from it. In 1M03, you have already learned a 1/3 to 1/2 of 1AA3. It wouldn't be too difficult for you to jump into 1AA3, so long as you understand trig with integration

if you feel really unsure, take math 1za3 (Eng math 1), you can probably get a waiver from the math department. Otherwise you can go ahead and learn some stuff for 1aa3 yourself to get a head start.
