I had one in first year and I like to think it improved the comfort of my bed, but I never really slept in the bed without it so who knows.

It really depends on the state of your mattress. My mattress in rez was really comfortable and i did just fine without a pad, but a friend of mine had one that was rock hard and very uncomfortable. and they definitely could have used one. If you can find one cheap somewhere it probably would be a good idea to go ahead and get one anyways. better safe then sorry

I used one for 2 years in rez, followed by my brother using it when he went away to school. I would definitely recommend getting one. The one I used was from Ikea
^ To add on, depending on what transport you've got on move-in day, maybe go pick one up after you get your stuff in your room if you feel like you'll need one. There's no shortage of places to shop within a half-hour radius or so from campus.
i had memory foam and a mattress pad and it made my bed super comfortable... i had tried going without either and it felt like i was sleeping on a rock and it seemed a lot colder :S idk that could be cause im picky with my beds though haha.. but i definitely recommend getting at least one, either memory foam or mattress pad.. itll make it much more comfortable if you like a softer bed
