McMaster Health Forum: Evidence-informed Policy Workshop

RSVP DEADLINE EXTENDED, Sign up now if you're interested in attending!

Please join us for the following event organized by the McMaster Health Forum Student Subcommittee:

Strengthening Health Systems in Canada and Low- and Middle-income Countries: A Workshop on Evidence-informed Policy

Date: October 9, 2014
Time: 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm
Location: McMaster Health Forum, DialogueSpace

This interactive workshop is designed for students interested in learning how quality is assessed within healthcare systems and how decisions are made to improve their performance in Canada and in low- and middle-income Countries (LMIC). Join us to discover what an evidence-based approach to policymaking entails.

Students will have the chance to choose a health systems topic they are passionate about and expert facilitators will teach students how to draft an effective, evidence-informed policy to address the issue. In particular, students will:
- learn the steps of evidence-informed policymaking;
- explore the highest-level research evidence available on the topic they are interested in, using the McMaster Health Forum’s Health Systems Evidence database, the world’s most comprehensive free access point for high quality health systems research;
- benefit from the expertise of a world-renowned researcher who runs similar workshops for governments and international agencies;
- network with other workshop participants who have a shared interest in policy development; and,
- receive a Certificate of Participation.

Our experienced facilitators are:
(1) Dr. John Lavis, director of the McMaster Health Forum and co-chair of the World Health Organization Evidence-Informed Policy Network, who earned his MD from Queen’s University, his M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and his PhD from Harvard University.

(2) Cristina Mattison, a Health Policy PhD student supervised by John Lavis, whose doctoral research interests focus on maternal health, and in particular the role of midwives in strengthening health systems.

Please note: During the workshop, participants will be working in groups of two. As such, students are invited to come with a partner, or we will connect students with a partner on the day of the event. Each group of two will need one laptop. Students arriving as singles are asked to bring their own laptop.

To reserve a spot, please RSVP to [email protected] with “Evidence-informed policymaking workshop” in the subject line, by Friday, October 3, 2014 (please note that this deadline has been extended and anyone interested in attending should RSVP ASAP). Space is limited to 30, so register soon! Participants selected on a first-come, first-served basis will be emailed a confirmation of registration. Additional registrants will be placed on a waiting list.

Students from any faculty (including undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs) are welcome to attend.
