I had this course with Dr. Farquharson in Winter 2011.
It is a very interesting course, and it is very easy to do well in it if you invest in proper time and interest in the topics that will be discussed.
You learn the "physics" behind X-Ray imaging, MRI, Radioactivity, and Radiography and "extremely basic physics". you dont have to worry about doing hard core calculus for this class. he will show u some equations because they are relevant to what he is teaching u, but u will never be asked to derive equations, or even do complex math.
the only equation which u can be asked to use is the basic exponential equation, and you will be a pro at using this equation before you even need to use it.
* see the attachments to get an idea about the course.**
TEXTBOOKS:
There is no textbook for this class (nor you need one). The prof posts detailed pdf notes for every topic. if you need one, he gives u a list of "recommended books" which you are welcome to use for your information.
HOW THE COURSE IS EVALUATED:
1. Assignments:
- 2 assignments
- each worth 15%
- assignments are based on what you are learning in lectures.
- first assignment was based on "the physics behind mammography"
- second assignment combined topics that had been learned so far
2. Tutorials:
- one hour mandatory tutorials per week
- worth 25 % of final mark
- 5% of 25% is for attendance
- in tutorials, the TA will go over the topics that are being discussed in lecture in more detail
- tutorials are good because its you 15 or so other fellow students. you can ask questions, discuss, share etc...
- after u complete a unit, you will a quiz on that unit. 20% of 25% is for the marks u get on the quizzes
- u will ~ have 4 quizzes.
- u get ample time to do these quizzes. one week for easy/review units to a month for the longest unit
(MRI) in our case.
3. Lecture Participation
- 5%
- iClicker multiple questions
- in the beginning of each lecture, there will be 1 - 2 iClicker questions about topics from previous class
- easy questions,
4. EXAM
- 40%
- given 6 questions. only need to do 4
OVERALL...it is not a hardcore physics course. But this course is more about learning how different medical technologies work rather than learning the complex physics medical physicists and technologists should be aware of. imo, i think this course is EASY.
The professor, Dr. Farquharson, is AWESOME. He is very good at delivering his lectures and wants his students to do well in his course.
I will definitely recommend this course.
