Midwifery Multi mini interview (MMI)
Hi everyone,

I have a few questions about the midwifery MMI. I have contacted the department but I haven't received a reply yet. I'm wondering if any of you might be able to answer them.

1) How many stations will be at the MMI in April 2014? Will there be any rest stops?
2) Will problem based questions such as (Give me a time when you used communication skills to solve a conflict, why do you want to be a midwife? What are your strengths and weaknesses?) be used during the MMI? Is there a second part to the interview that might ask these traditional questions?
3) I know that other schools publish the scoring system used by assessors (e.g. Mac med). Is this information available for the Midwifery MMI?

Thanks in advance!

I've been involved in several MMIs, but not midwifery, so my answers are more general, but I hope you find them somewhat helpful while you are waiting for a response from the school.

1) There are usually 7-10 stations. I think 10 is more typical, but there could be a bit less. Whether or not there will be a rest station depends on the number in your group. If there are 10 stations and 10 ppl in your group, then no, there will be no rest stations. If there are 11 people in your group, then there will be a rest station. The numbers don't work out exactly, so some groups are slightly bigger than others.
2) Some schools have 1-2 stations that ask traditional interview question; others might have none. In some cases it differs based on the year, whether they choose to ask a question like that. I've never seen an interview set-up where you have MMI and then a traditional interview after - it would take way too much manpower to set up, not to mention already being a very long day for the candidates and people running the interviews.
3) I'm not sure for midwifery, but I know not all schools publish it; if it's not published and freely available, then nobody is allowed to tell you - everyone involved signs a confidentiality agreement.

albalks says thanks to starfish for this post.

Thank you that was really helpful!

If there's anyone in midwifery who has gone through the MMI, I'd love your input on whether or not they ask traditional questions. That will help me target my prep.

Thanks again

Oh also, the confidentiality agreement encompasses the questions - so, nobody is allowed to tell you what questions they had on their MMI. It's especially not smart to say what they are on a public forum There are examples freely available, and those are obviously fine to talk about and practice with (and a fairly decent indicator of the types of questions a typical MMI will ask).

I'm honestly not sure if the confidentiality agreement encompasses the general types of questions that are asked, but it might be okay if someone only says yes/no? I'm really not sure. Definitely don't expect specifics though; you don't want to get people in trouble. Professional schools tend to take that sort of thing rather seriously.

Yeah, I know that they have to sign a confidentiality agreement. I wasn't asking them to divulge any questions to me. I just wanted to know whether or not traditional based questions are asked. As you said, a simple yes or no would do the trick.

Totally depends on the program in question, but you should definitely know how to answer some of the more traditional questions like "Tell me about yourself", "Why midwifery" etc. It may not come up directly but some aspects will likely come up in some way or another.
