Ojibwe 1Z03
I took this class Term I of 2008-2009.
The course is usually offered two out of every three years.
The language itself is quite difficult to learn. It's not comparable to learning any European languages...there are no cognates. The double vowel pronunciation makes things difficult too. Perhaps what is most frustrating is the language is very dialectal; so there are different spellings of words, different pronunciations/enunciations and often letters (some of which can mean the same thing; for example "b" and "p") change, and sometimes different words for the same thing.
There are very few texts available, and they have the same issues as mentioned above. Internet resources are few as well.
The prof was pretty disorganized, and didn't follow the lesson plan for a lot of the course. Assignments and deadlines changed, so if you missed a class you ended up getting screwed.
We also read a book called The Manitous, which explained some of the Anishnaabe cosmology. It was pretty interesting. We had to write a book report on it afterward.
