You are right. Everyone in the background is a cardboard cut out, and the camera flashes in the far are just automated LEDs.

NBC is apparently airing at 7:30 tonight, and not right now. they only want that prime time crowd

If you have a smartphone, download the CBC Sochi 2014 app. There is a live stream video of the ceremony there. I'm pretty sure you can replay it later too. That's actually where I'm watching the ceremony right now, not on TV since I have no cable.

But seriously I don't even know why anyone is trying, noone can beat those Olympics in China. They might as well just stop the whole thing. It's more of a political competition now anyway.
