What I don't understand is why are parents so fearful of wifi exposure at school when their homes are probably in range of at least 4-5 wifi signals 24/7.

From the article:
"There is not one study, not one study that looks at long-term effect of Wi-Fi."

There have been similar questions raised by scientists around the world. And some libraries and
schools in Europe and in California have gone as far as removing the technology.

It was just last month a House of Commons committee recommended more study on the
long-term effects of low frequency electromagnetic radiation.

Don't be blinded by convenience, of course everyone like having wi-fi, but is it really needed in schools? Really? Doubt it. Furthermore, there is no long term data, we will see the effects, good or bad later in our lifetime, we are the guinea pigs. There is no way you can just assume it's no big deal, no one gets cancer overnight...my 2 cents

Your two cents are incorrect.

*FACEPALM*

Parents should realize that Wi-Fi =/= atomic bomb. Fail.
Seriously....

And this isn't the first time I've heard of something like this...

I know, some people are rather paranoid, even if there is some scientific reasoning to back up their claims. But in all honesty, I can't see wi-fi as being any more harmful than the electromagnetic fields created by the unshielded electrical wires in most buildings.

I think this whole fear started when someone noticed that the introduction of cell phones coincided with a huge increase in brain cancer and testicular cancer (you hold your cell phone to your head or keep it in your pocket).

I love how the article contradicts the parent like two sentences in.

"There is scientific information that is saying that this might be dangerous to children," said parent Gina Shimoda.

two sentences later.....

"Health Canada's position is that Wi-Fi is absolutely safe in schools. There's no scientific evidence that tells us otherwise," said Beth Pieterson with Health Canada.
