Packing for Residence: A MacInsiders Guide

Packing for Residence: A MacInsiders Guide

By Mal Haigh

Move-in day is a few weeks (or days) away. You've read the "to-bring" lists, arranged transportation, and suckered up to your parents to buy you those last-needed pieces. You're ready to go! Wait a second...you still need to pack! How the heck are you going to go about packing up all of your personal belongings PLUS all the things you need for university? No worries - MacInsiders is here to help with these five handy tips.

1. Make a list
I can't stress how important this key organizational tool is. As new ideas for things to bring come into your head, write them down - keep the list stuck on the fridge or pegged to a peg board in your room. That way, its in easy sight! Take your list with you as you start to pack things away, and check them off as things go in boxes, bags or suitcases.

2. Find the best packing materials for your needs
You can utilize a variety of containers and bags for packing up your things. I've found that garbage bags (the heavy-duty ones) are extremely useful for transporting clothing, towels and bedding. They not only save on space once you get into rez, but you can recycle them for other purposes (because we all know, at some point, you'll need to do a cleaning of your dorm!). Keep in mind ease of transportation, and ease of unpacking. Its also a wise idea to bring along a small- to medium-sized piece of luggage (like the bags with wheels) to transport things home on weekends.

3. Take only what you need!
There is no need to bring heavy-duty winter jackets with you at this stage of the game. If you're able to go home every once and a while, leave the off-seasonal gear back at your place; you'll save on space and weight (have you ever noticed how HEAVY those winter coats are?). Also, its going to be hard, but you're going to need to decide what you REALLY want to take with you. Take maybe a few of your prized possessions and sports trophies; there's no need (or space) to bring your entire "I Love Me" wall.

4. Label label label!
I can't stress this enough! Label all of your things, especially things you know could get mixed up with someone else's. Iron ons for clothes, good ol' Sharpie markers, and even masking tape are some of the variety of ways to label your stuff to make sure everyone knows its yours.

5. Remove packaging from items before packing them up.
Not only will this save a ton of space in your boxes and bags, but it will also save you time once you start unpacking your things to use them. Who wants to spend an afternoon cutting through plastic packaging when you could be out meeting your rez-mates?

With these five tips, you should be set! Best of luck on move-in day.

I just wanted to add for #2 that plastic blue bins or any type of bin with covers are very useful for transporting everything (I use them). They are stackable, easy to carry, and very durable (you can get them from Wal-Mart). And on the plus side, you can use them for all 4 years.

Yes, you are provided with 1 garbage can and 1 blue bin (You should bring plastic bags so that you won't have to lug the entire garbage can with you to the kitchen/outdoors. Some of the garbage cans are big while others are made of metal).

All students will get the MSU swag, you just need to show your MacID card.

Agreed!
Those bins are so useful.
Wal-mart has them in diff colours too haha, there's a nice purple one I wanted
but I've noticed that Canadian Tire sells them for a cheaper price.
