: March 29, 2013 (possibility to continue until Sept. 2013)

Expected time commitment: 10-15 hours per week

Job Description:

"Bombardier Transportation has won two international innovation awards for its TrackSafe technology designed to improve safety and productivity for railway track workers. Bombardier developed the TrackSafe product in collaboration with the McMaster RFID Applications Lab at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, to reduce the hazards of inspecting and repairing track and related infrastructure. TrackSafe takes advantage of RFID technology to create improved location awareness for track workers and train operators, alerting both to potential hazards. At present, Bombardier and the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority are conducting a TrackSafe demonstration project on the Authority’s Green Line."

Additional project information

Responsibility of intern:
  • Researching and analyzing information for the Tracksafe project in an urban environment.
  • Identification of key components that would need to be monitored based on specifications provided by manufacturers.
  • Research will be based on self-health monitoring of the current version of the system; exploring techniques that could be used to monitor the health of key components and proactively replace components that might fail in between scheduled maintenance intervals.

Qualifications:
  • Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering or Engineering & Management (3rd/4th+ year); knowledge of embedded system design (software/hardware) will be considered an asset by not necessary
  • Successful candidate will have project experience; research projects considered an asset; extra-curricular involvement considered an asset
