Pi Day

Sine, sine, cosine, sine! 3.14159!

HAPPY PI DAY EVERYONE!

Pi Day commemorates the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (or 3/14 in month/day date format), because 3, 1 and 4 are the three most significant digits of π.

In 1989, Larry Shaw created Pi Day. It was first celebrated at the San Francisco Exploratorium, where Shaw, a physist, walked around a circular space with other staff and Exporatorium attendees. They then ate fruit pies.

Some Pi Day Facts
  • 2004: Daniel Tammet recited 22,514 decimal digits of π.
  • On 12 March 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution (HRES 224), recognizing March 14, 2009, as National Pi Day.
  • 2010: Google presented a Google Doodle celebrating the holiday, with the word Google laid over images of circles and pi symbols.

So what is the significance of eating pie on Pi Day? Pi and pie are homophones, and pie is tasty!

No Google Doodle. I can no longer throw the appropriate festivities that this occasion so rightly deserves. D:

I'll be celebrating Tau (τ) day instead of Pi day this year

Check out why Tau > Pi

We did it up right this year: Engineering is collecting money today, for the Ronald McDonald House. $5 allows you to pie someone who has volunteered to get pied, $10 allows that person to redirect the pie, and $20 is the final possible response to the redirect.

Also, there's just money collecting going down in JHE lobby.

Whewt!

Mole day should be June 02, and mole times would be at 10:23 a.m and p.m. >.>;

1 mol = 6.02*10^23 particles

Off-topic: I think I saw you at the Wednesday Live Lecture today.
