Psych 2MA3 Music cognition
Hi!

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about psych 2MA3 music cognition - I don't think it's a very popular psych course. If anyone has taken it, can they provide some feedback on it? Such as:

- How much music theory do you use?
- Does it focus on the neuroscience aspect of music?
- How are the lectures/tests/exams?

Thanks in advance!

I think it's a new course. I can't find any old course outlines for it.

I don't think it's new, unless it's under a new course code...checking the course calendar, I see that the requirements are completely different from what I remember, but the subject matter seems the same.

I forget what the course code was, but I was denied entry into the course...you used to require a general physics course which was an antirequisite with Physics 2B06 (a fairly heavy physics course which is much more difficult and covers far more), or barring that, another like 2 psych courses.

Naturally, having taken 2B06, I had to take some other psychology I didn't want to take on like, sensory and perception (even though in Kinesiology I had to take Psychomotor Behaviour where we covered both topics). So I contacted the professor and even met with her in person (who was a complete ***** by the way...maybe I caught her on a bad day or something, but geeeez....I think she got fired eventually) and she refused to process a waiver because 'someone who actually needs to take psychology won't be able to take it if I do.' Talking down to me as if I have no right to take it (being in Kinesiology at the time).

So I was under the impression it is actually a popular course.

Yeah, I don't think it's a new course, but it is relatively new (I couldn't find a course outline either). But I don't think you need any pre-req's since I registered for it. All they recommend is that you have Rudiments 2 from the RCM.

They probably switched course codes then. Psychology does a really good job of posting up all their course outlines every year. I went back 3-4 years and couldn't find anything about the course.

Actually, you need:

Registration in any Music Cognition program (B.A., B.Mus., B.Sc); or PSYCH 1X03 (or 1AA3), 1XX3 (or 1A03) and registration in an Honours program; or ISCI 1A24. Completion of Grade 2 Rudiments from The Royal Conservatory of Music is recommended.

So you need to be in any music cognition program or have taken both intro to psych and are in an honour program.
