My question is: what can I take? can I only choose a course from the complimentary electives list or can I take whatever I want? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Something tells me that you have to choose from this list...
But also note: "Substitutions, either taken at McMaster
University or elsewhere on a Letter of Permission, require the approval of Associate Dean (Academic) of Engineering."
So if you are interested in a course not on the list, try contacting the Associate Dean of Engineering for approval.
