You can, however there are certain instructions you need. The router needs to have a correct static IP address, so DHCP will work properly I will see if I can find the link for you.

I'm pretty sure you can, but beware of Res' 2GB a night limit. If you're lucky enough to live near one of the study rooms like I was last year, you can connect to MacSecure / MacConnect and have virtually unlimited bandwith, but friends of mine got their internet throttled when using the wired connection at Res.

I mean most residences have study/ common rooms on the floor, and if you happen to live really close to one of them, it's amazing.
I used their WiFi all year, and my room-mate and I would get like 4MBps download speeds on uTorrent at night.

Here is the page you will use to set up your router, and obtain a static IP for it
page can only be accessed in res:

As for a router, doesn't really matter. D-Links are pretty good. You dont need anything extreme

I'm kind of confused here, do you need a router to go online if you live on residence?

No you do not, you just need an ethernet cable which is supplied to you when you get to McMaster.

Thanks for clearing that up, but does that mean you need a router if you want to use wireless devices?

There is no wireless in residence except for the common room and/or study rooms. If your room is close enough you may get wireless. Also, if your room is close enough to campus buildings you may get internet from there as well (I think the only residence may be Edwards getting wireless from CNH though).

Just about the 2GB limit, I went over 2GB almost every day last year and I noticed no throttling other than when I was using Bit Torrent.
