To be guaranteed a single room, you need to achieve an average of at least 95%.

When filling out the residence applications, you can request to be in the same room as your friend. My brother did this and a few of my friends.

yes, but you will lose your residence deposit (which you will pay when you accept your offer of admission)

Residence is the same price for everyone.

Not the whole deposit would be lost. According to this:

http://housing.mcmaster.ca/residence...ant_dates.html

There is time after the residence assignments are released for you to withdraw from residence and lose only half of your deposit, so you would lose $300.

In any case, you can indicate only single rooms on your application and if you get lucky you may just get it! I do know that this happened in first year where someone I know put down only single rooms and ended up getting on even without the 95% average. So it's worth a try.

Also to be safe, you can put single rooms as your top preferences but then as your last preference you can put double and request a roommate who you know. This would ensure that you don't get something like a triple or a quad, which I assume you probably will not enjoy if you are wanting a single.

The way the room assignment works is that firstly, those people with a 95%+ who request a single room get it, then everything else goes to lottery, based on the choices you set out as your preferred styles of residences in the application form. Since you want a room to yourself your top 3 should be single room, apartment, suite (perhaps not in that order). In apartment and suite styles you get your own room, a common area, your own bathroom and a kitchen. You'll have 3-5 roommates that have their own rooms as well to put up with, but it's essentially a single room with a few perks if you go for apartment or suite style.

If you put down someone you know on the application and they put you down as well I think they always put those two people together. I have two roommates who put each other down, so it seems to work out. Apart from that, your roommates are entirely random.
