when do i get assigned a roommate?
how do i know who he is?

You find out beginning-mid July. And on your application it'll say the first name of you roommate. If you entered your email to be contacted and your roommate as well, there' s a"message" option on the application where you can message each other and exchange emails/full name etc and talk to each other that way.

Not likely ice cream, I haven't heard of a coed apartment in first year. I'm not sure if they exist unless you request it specifically. But like Sarah said You will be alerted by email that will let you know who your roommates are and will give you a means to contact them time.

Just as a cautionary tale from someone who got stuck with awful roommates: Make sure you set down strict rules in your roommate agreement if your roommates seem like they'll be any sort of trouble down the line. It saved me a lot of grief down the line.
