Second Year Health Sci Courses
Hey guys,

I just finished my first year of health sci and was just wondering what the second year courses would be like. I'm particularly interested in anatomy. The anatomy labs sound really interesting and hands-on but I've also heard that the course is very difficult (from upper years as well as nursing students who took anatomy first year). I was just wondering if anyone could clarify or further explain this?

Also if anyone could describe what the other mandatory BHSc Level II courses (epidemiology, cell biology and health, attitude & behaviour) that would be great too. Particularly, is second year cell bio similar to first year? Thanks in advance! Just trying to gauge what second year will be like and how I can prepare for it.

You should check your degree to see which courses/options are in each year

So if you are in core BHSc you have to take Anatomy anyways as it is required. It is really difficult and a lot of work but its obviously do-able. If you put in the effort a 10 can be achieved no problem. Its more so difficult because there is just so much content as opposed to challenging concepts (for the most part at least).

The anatomy lab is awesome, it is hands on for sure and a good chunk of your mark will come from Bellringer tests - where specimens have pins in them and you have to say what is labelled and what said anatomical features does physiologically.

Epi - Very dry but important if you want to go into healthcare. Not a lot of work required except for the two essays and final exam. I didnt study until about 3 days before the final and did well.

Cell Bio - A typical inquiry course. You get a prompt, ours for instance was "deliver a drug to the nucleus" and then go from there. Not the most intense inquiry course ever and also doable. Lots of meetings though. As I transferred into BHSc I cant really comment on how it compares to first year.

HABITS - You do yoga and dance. Go to class and do the reflections you will get the pass.

Stats - I still dont know what happened in stats. Least organized course I have ever encountered and from what I have heard it has always and will remain this way.

Second year is a lot more work then first year. Time management becomes rather important.
