Public schools are more likely to close because attendance is mandatory and as some students have to travel a long distance there is more likely risk of injury. Combined with the fact that they are legally responsible for the students during the day. So they are more likely to give a snow day.
University students on the other hand are adults, and profs don't take attendance, so they leave it up to your own judgement if you go in or not. The only time they grant snow days if its really bad and staff can't safely get to work.

Definitely should be a Snow day today, prof came in at the last 5 minutes of an 8:30 class...only reason people stuck around was to get their assignments back...

I love how I had to come for class today and not even the mountain accesses were plowed at 8 am. I swear at one point I thought there was going to be a huge accident on the Jolley Cut.

I don't know about you, but they came for me. o.O
...granted they were 10 minutes late, and took 20 minutes extra to get here.
If you're at Mac, you should take the basement/indoor shortcuts. The ice pellets hurt my face. :(
