Social Work 3F03 - social work with groups

This class is taught by Sheila Sammon who is really energetic about the course. The class was divided into a two hour lecture and a 1 hour tutorial. In lecture, we learned about the theory of groups and had some in-class discussions and activities- kind of dry at times. In tutorial, we participated in a group simulation as a member or as the group facilitator. In my opinion, the best part of the course was the tutorial; each week, we were given a situation and a character to role play. As someone who went to an arts high school for drama, I thought this was really fun; my tutorial members also loved this aspect of the course and it was just a great way to unwind while learning about group dynamics. Each week, we were to write a 2 page reflection on each tutorial in which we discuss group process, social location and the readings. There were ten journals and each entry is worth 5%. It was kind of difficult to do really well on these because the expectations were vague but I found that I did better with more reflection on my social location. There was also ten percent for participation and a final group proposal worth 40%.
