I swear I had an iPod app that was almost exactly like this... Killed a lot of time with it. Fun stuff.

But yeah, even as a guitar player I find this awesome.

This is called a "sequencer."

A lot of producers use this to make a beat for a song, etc. The columns represent the beat that the sample gets played on, and the rows represent different samples, whether they be drums, bells, cymbals, etc.

Most popular application starts with Ableton.

Akai is another popular brand...but honestly the most useful tool I've used for sequencing and music production is an iPad lol

There are programs you can download that'll take any sound playing from your computer and record it into an audio file. I'm not too sure of the programs but I know DJ Shiftee talks about it in an interview

omggg try clicking on all the squares... before you get to filling them all you are sure to die from some kind of seizure.

this definitely makes me feel like I'm the best African beat creator in the world though.
