The original legislation would have affected Canadians just as much regardless.

Oh boy, not in Canada! This will hopefully be crushed quickly. ACTA is the european SOPA and is even worse, some interesting articles on it. It is still being pushed through and hasn't been stopped like SOPA was.
I would've thought that politicians all over the world would've realized that supporting a bill like this is career suicide, judging by the huge backlash over SOPA in the US.
