Women's Centre Referendum

In December of 2008 the Elections Committee received a petition which proposed the establishment of a women's centre on campus to be funded and directed by the MSU without a student fee levy.

After careful debate, the Elections Committee has ratified the 2009 Women's Centre Referendum question to be:

"Do you support the establishment of a Women’s Centre funded by and under the direction of the McMaster Students Union?"

Despite efforts to raise awareness by Elections Services, no official campaign side has been declared for the Referendum. However, the department has encouraged students through campus media to engage the issue. Candidates were also encouraged to discuss the issue with the electorate to get voters to come out and express their opinion.

There doesn't seem to be much info on this women's centre prosposal. not being a woman, i must ask, is this something that many female students are actually wanting / in support of? or is this much like the DVD rental referendum where a small group of people proposed it largely based on the benefits they would directly receive?

Really, what would a Women's Centre provide that isn't already available through other services such as SHEC?

there wasn't much information provided in the preface of the petition so whatever the students signed for was what went to referendum. The elections committee couldn't add anything to the ballot that wasn't on the petition as there'd be no way to ensure that's the students who wanted.

Personally, I'm not a fan of it because I'm not convinced that having a centre devoted to these issues would be the best way to tackle any women's issues. We also have soo many different services on campus that overlap with what this service might be mandated to do. But, because it is soo vague, it's hard to know what it would even do or what you're even voting for.

I also appreciate that you recognize what the DVD actually was - "a small group of people proposed it largely based on the benefits they would directly receive" This is not the same in this case thankfully.

Woohoo the voting is over. Although it was quite painful standing in the cold for hours, campaigning and meeting everyone was well worth freezing in the cold. Good luck everyone.
