Lecturer: Dr. Fred Hoppe
Dr. Hoppe is the only professor to teach this course and it's a very 'chill' course since everything feels very laid back. Not very proof heavy and there's some computation involved, but it feels like an extension of basic counting rules/discrete random variables from STATS 2D03. He does cover additional content for fun, but most revolve around gambling, particularly the games, Craps and Video Poker. Not very pratical for upper year statistics, but it's an easy and fun course! The topics taught in this class were,
1. Review on Probability and Discrete Random Variables, Expectation
2. Roulette (briefly), Dice Games & Card Games (twenty one, poker)
3. Craps & Betting Systems
4. Martingales
5. Video Poker
6. Mentioned But Not Tested: Markov Chains, Convergence Laws
You will do well in this course if you have a group of friends you can collaborate with to do the assignments. These assignments are worth A LOT (in my year, 14% per assignment), but everybody does well on them since they collaborate. Some problems are difficult though, but having a grasp on how to do these problems will allow you to prepare very well on the exam. There are no tutorials for this class, just lectures.
Dr. Hoppe will do his best to help you out on the assignments and will never tell you the answer, but give you hints that may lead you to finding an answer. The assignments were made by Dr. Hoppe with some taken from the textbook (all of which can be found online). Lectures were based primarily on the book, but made very concise since the text is very dense.
Mark Distribution:
70% for 5 Assignments (14% each) - the # of assignments may change
30% Exam
