Student-Professor relationships
What do you think of students adding their professors on Facebook? (I recently found one of my professors listed as a friend of a girl in one of my classes)
Also, what does it say about a professor if he accepts a friend request from a student?

I personally think it's somewhat unprofessional.

What are your thoughts on this?

I personally think there's nothing wrong with it, as long as you don't have that professor for any upcoming courses. That being said, I come from a really small program, so I have a few professors on facebook. A lot of professors will prefer linkedin though, which is fair. But I think it's best to ask them before adding them (if possible). I guess there really isnt any clear-cut yes or no answer. It really depends on the professor, the student and how well the student and prof know each other.

One of the creepiest moments of my life was when a former professor sent me an invitation for bbm. I barely even knew the guy, never once spoke to him one-on-one and he was actually one of the worst profs I've ever had. And about 5 years after I finished his class, I got that bbm invitation.

In general though, I think it depends. I've had people go from my professor to my work supervisor and then you get to know them quite a bit better, and having them on facebook is no big deal. It's a bit awkward if they're currently teaching a class you're taking, though.

It's not like the prof is sleeping with that friend of yours. Even if he was, as long as he wasn't involved with her while he was teaching her, it doesn't matter.

I think it's inappropriate if the student is taking a class with that professor, but otherwise no. I've had profs (and TAs) that I've gotten to know pretty well, including one who I took a course one-on-one with where I don't think it would be all that weird after the fact, and I am linked to several profs on LinkedIn.
