Don't take notes. It's a waste of effort, really. It takes your focus away from following what the prof is doing, and everything that you'd write down will be in the text / on-line somewhere anyway

Yeah...I don't take notes in class. I do it after. But if you have ENVIR SC or COMP SCI, the profs leave out parts in their lectures so you don't really have a choice but to copy some stuff. It's their way of making the students attend class. >_>

DO take notes. It's worth the effort, really. It makes you focus on what the prof is doing, and everything you write down sticks in your mind and keeps you engaged.
cuz lets face it, if you look at online notes that seen complicated with no side notes that will help you understand it. You'll be lost.

anyway, you're going to have a shit ton of readings/quizzes/midterms/assignments/papers regardless of which program you're in. If you're in Soc sci/Hum, you won't have labs or anything, but if you're in eng/science you won't have essays (for the most part, anyway).
It's all about balance. Try to write out a daily schedule and stick with it as close as possible. Give yourself reasonable breaks and decent sleep time, as well.
Reward yourself on weekends or throughout the week if you follow closely or even get on top of everything.
It's hard, but this is uni. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

Only open a textbook if you know what you're looking for. Never READ your textbook unless you're in SERIOUS trouble.

Another option people seem to don't think about is reducing their course load. Take some courses in the spring/summer or add an extra year onto your program. It will help relieve the stress and give you time to actually have some fun.

Listening to the prof is more useful than writing down everything he says, I think. I don't see why it would be difficult to understand the online notes / text if you listened to lecture...

My suggestion is to push back when you go to bed 10 minutes each week for the rest of the year. You'll acclimatize yourself to going to bed later and if you even manage an extra hour a day with no apparent physiological detriments the following day (i.e. being really sleepy) that's an extra 7 hours of study time a week. It really adds up over time.

Just work hard in 1st year. Coming from Science, and the same is true for many of my Science friends, 1st year is the hardest.
2nd-4th year is a cruise. And like one of the previous posts said, use your summer to accelerate/catch up on courses! You're in first year now, plan on taking 2 orgos in the summer, it'll lighten your courseload lots next year + you only have to concentrate on 1 course for the summer at a time! Remember, your summer is 4 MONTHS long. You can find a job (good luck finding a science summer job rofl) or ease up your 2nd year.
