Sunken gardens?
So I was listening to peter george's last lecture on youtube.. and he said "some people still complain about the disappearance of the sunken garden", apparently it was where the hospital was...~50 years ago. I googled it and there were no modern photos of it but from the black and white photos/paintings, it looked like.. a dream land of roses and a big pond filled with lily pads. just wondering if anyone has any more info on this sunken garden or pictures

tl;dr: need pictures/info of the former sunken garden that was present at mac ~50 years ago

temptingf8 says thanks to killza for this post.

Why don't we recreate it? After all, everywhere you walk on campus, we appear to be in the midst of construction. While I like real life labyrinths, they'd be more worth it if there was something the students really wanted being built.

I'm really sad that this is gone!

What about if we contacted the Mac Alumni Association (MAA) and made making a new one part of a class gift, kind of like the rock gardens near faculty hollow?

I say we get rid of the 3 separate green houses near bridges and combine it into one huge green house with pretty roses all year round. Better yet, get rid of the art museum and make a huge garden there.. then again, we're kinda in debt so any professional grade garden isn't feasible =(

i just found a site with all the pics, i'll post them here

My favorite one:

i think its safe to say that it would've been freaking amazing to have lived when that garden was alive... just think how huge that garden was!! It covered the entire area where the hospital is now.. wow.

heres an article on it:

That was a beautiful garden. These days stuff like that isn't a priority sadly. It would be nice to have something like that on campus! But I also don' think people today would appreciate gardens like that as much as people did back then.

Actually, I think that in an age of new environmental appreciation and disdain regarding excessive unnecessary industrial expansion, people would love to have this back. Just look at the lawns on campus this week - they were filled with people appreciating nature. It would also emphasize that we as a community place importance on all aspects of the community, especially the ecosystem. It would have enormous benefits for the Earth and Science and Biology programs because they could study wildlife, in the wild. I think the art museum is an important part of academic and art culture at Mac, even if it's not densely populated. The outcry from Art History majors regarding the introduction of a minor and removal of majoring in the program demonstrates how passionate those who enjoy the museum really are about it.

As well, I think that after ELM, introduction of this kind of wildlife would be applauded.

and combining 3 greenhouses into 1? wtf
you know there are different types of plants and they require different conditions, like amount of sunlight, humidity, temperature, etc to grow properly
