Switching Faculties Question/Advice
Hi,

I'm currently enrolled in ENG 1 at mac but I'm having second thoughts. Its 3 weeks and I'm not really enjoying the material as much as I thought I would. I'm really interested to go down the software engineering path. I crossed checked software eng to computer science and they seem nearly the same but without having to deal with first year physics, chem, material s,etc. I really enjoy programming and 1D04 so far is the most enjoyable class I have, so I'm wondering if comp sci is better suited for me.

Would it be too late to transfer over to comp sci now? And could anyone give a break down of comp sci vs software eng at mac? I've read into it a little but I'm still not sure what the differences are.

Thank you.

I would at least like to believe that Computer Science has a much more theoretical component to it compared to Software Engineering. And, I would also like to believe that what I previously stated holds at most universities if not all. Not all courses in Computer Science have a programming aspect to it. Though, you do have your fair share of Computer Science courses that do have some programming involved in some manner or another throughout all four years. If you're only really interested in programming, your best bet would be considering going into college.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like for more information pertaining to Computer Science here at Mac.

i am pretty sure all you can do as of now is complete the 6 courses you are registered in right now for this term. and then next term you can do your best to take as many courses needed by comp sci

You can complete first year and go to sfw eng. But the reason they do that is to give everyone a feel for everything to decide. You could but i think the eng degree is worth more

herBs hit the nail on the head: If ALL you're interested in is programming, then college is probably a path to consider, more so than any Uni program.

University programs with programming are going to have a decent chunk of theory involved. And Software Eng will also have the prerequisite that you demonstrate a basic knowledge of physics and chemistry as well: It's a basic requirement for an engineer. You get it out of the way in first year, then you get into the software theory in 2nd year, onward.
