Synthetic Biology Symposium

McMaster will be hosting its first ever synthetic biology symposium on February 29th, in MDCL 3022 from 4:30-6:30.

http://www.facebook.com/events/319120418136301/

Synthetic biologist Dr. Sergio Peisajovich from U of T, along with Dr. Gerry Wright and Dr. Yingfu Li from McMaster will discuss their work, ideas on this emerging field and how we can further synthetic biology research here at McMaster.

The emerging field of synthetic biology leverages our current understanding of molecular biology, so that standardized genes can be used as building blocks to engineer completely novel biological systems. Using E. coli to produce diesel fuel or anti-malarial drugs, RNA to detect soil contamination, and replacing entire genomes are just some of the many recent applications of synthetic biology. “Designer organisms” created from scratch to perform a specific function are becoming a reality.

If you're unable to attend, but still interested in synthetic biology, please contact the event organizer Ben Scott ([email protected]) .
