Synthetic biologist Dr. Ratmir Derda from the University of Alberta, and Dr. Nathan Magarvey from McMaster will discuss their work, ideas on this emerging field and how we can further synthetic biology research here at McMaster.
You'll also hear from the McMaster iGEM team about our project, the iGEM competition, and how you can get involved in the lab.
The emerging field of synthetic biology leverages our current understanding of molecular biology, so that standardized genes can be used as building blocks to engineer completely novel biological systems. Using E. coli to produce diesel fuel or anti-malarial drugs, RNA to detect soil contamination, and replacing entire genomes are just some of the many recent applications of synthetic biology. “Designer organisms” created from scratch to perform a specific function are becoming a reality.
