Taunton
Hi everyone,

My name is Ben, I'm an alumnus as of this summer (June 8, 2010) graduating with a B.Sc in Life Science, and a certification in Geographic Information Systems. I love McMaster Science and was involved with the faculty throughout my time here as a McMaster Science Society executive member for three years, and a Student Representative Assembly Science representative for one year. I was involved with Welcome Week for Science every year after my first year.

Now that I'm graduating, I will likely be on MacInsiders less often, and while I will still be posting occaisonally, I will certainly be less involved in the campus politics. With that being said, I'm still hoping to be of service to people and especially new and prospective students so please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about anything. For the time being at least, I'm on top of how nearly everything works at our wonderful school.

I'm currently finishing up my application to join the Canadian Forces as a Marine Surface and Sub-Surface (MARS) Officer. This career, though not something I was initially considering, is now what I'm hoping to get involved with and spend a good chunk (if not all) of my life doing. This position is the career track that leads to being a Captain of one of the ships in the Canadian Navy, and has potential to allow me to travel the entire world for my job. I now consider this to be an ideal job for me. Ask me for more details if interested.

As for my tastes: music is probably the most important thing in my life that isn't actually a person or education/career. Check out my profile to see a chunck of the music I listen to. I also play guitar, and have been since Christmas of 2004.

I don't own a TV and while I probably will eventually, the internet and my computer are my primary entertainment sources. My favourite TV shows are Friends (best show ever), The Office, Family Guy, Mythbusters and Star Trek TNG. I love documentaries and learning about almost everything, and this means I'm also pretty good at trivia.

Video games: I don't game nearly as much as I used to in high school, but I still do and my favourite genres are strategy and rpg. I'm not a big online gamer... tried WoW but got bored after my free month was up. My favourite games are Civ IV (Civ V soontimes!), the Fallout series, Final Fantasy series, Total War series, Oblivion, sports games, and Need for Speed series (which has sucked lately).

I also am into numismatics (collecting and studying coins and paper money), and I'm hoping to get back into it once I establish my career. University didn't leave me much money to spend on my coin collection.

I'm quite political and opinionated, and one of my main philosophies is summed up by this quote:

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind" (Dr. Seuss)

I joined MacInsiders when I was elected to the Student Representative Assembly as one of many good ways to communicate with students at McMaster. It's a great community and resource, and I hope to continue to be helpful, even as an alumnus.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about anything, and I will help you.

There's no such thing as a "Captain" on Her Majesty's Canadian Ships.

But good luck with the Navy application!

Thanks.

This was written for a general audience, most of whom don't care anyways. I could say commanding officer if it makes you feel better.

Oh god, I hate Friends. The smartest person I know also loves the show... I don't see the appeal. XD
