Yes. You will need it to read the chapters but most importantly you need the online content, which comes with the textbook, for the listening parts of the tests. I have just the textbook if you want to buy it off me. I can give you a decent price for it. You can also buy just the online courseware online as well.

If you have prior music knowledge, you could probably get by (possibly a double digit if you took music in high scool) without it and just use youtube to look up the songs, and don't skip class.

Does the online content expire after each year, or can it be resold like the textbooks for future students?

It expires in 160 days I believe. I personally would not use YouTube or anything like that as a replacement for online content. It is much easier to identify the exact examples they use from the online stuff.

Majority of the time, Woolhouse uses YouTube videos to showcase the songs (at least he did last year). You could probably even ask him for the links he uses, or just jot them down as he plays them in class.

I guess it depends who the prof is. My prof barely ever used YouTube.
