It means that the edition isn't the same or that's what it should mean. Some editions are similar to the previous one while other are very different.
So I would try and figure out if the difference in editions is great (So the class is using the 9th edition, the 8th edition is close. I wouldn't really go farther back). You also should try and figure out if the content of both edition are roughly the same.
But in general, you should go with the same edition (unless the teacher says you can use the older edition) because the teachers will sometimes post pages and what not, so it's easier to find.
In the first class for physics 1BB3, the teacher said using the older edition was ok and she posted the pages for both editions. But you won't find out until first class... maybe e-mail the teacher.
