transfer from second year?
Hi,
I was wondering that if you are in a second year program can you still transfer to a different program if you have fulfilled that program's pre-requisites and have the grades for it?? Thx

Drush

Yes, you can shadow most programs and apply after 2nd year. What program are you interested in? It depends on the program, for e.g. for biochem, you can't go directly into 3rd year without fulfilling the biochem-specific courses in 2nd year. Also it depends on whether or not your CA is competitive for the applicant pool that year

Just wanted to add that this is only true for programs with limited capacity. If you want to transfer into a program with unlimited capacity, then you just need the prerequisites and the grades. You can find out if a program has limited capacity or not in the undergraduate calendar.

yeh i was thinking about biochem.. i am not sure if i want to go into that yet or not in second year so i wanted to keep my options open..so if i take the pre-requisite courses for bio chem in second year and have the grades i can still transfer to that program in third year? right?

All biochem programs (Core and Specializations) are limited capacity.

Unfortunately not. This is because Biochem has limited enrolment as Jeremy said, but also because there is the 2L06 lab course which is restricted to students in Biochem that you won`t be able to register for in 2nd year or if they would allow you to apply and re-register as a 2nd year student again but in biochem i.e. repeat 2nd year. I'm not sure if there is any way around that, as I haven't heard of any, but it wouldn't hurt to email a faculty advisor in the Associate Dean's office to clarify if it's happened before.

Most people who transfer into biochem just take 2L06 in third year. It doesn't add an extra year onto their degree nor do they have to repeat second year, if most of the courses they took transfer over. If you were shadowing, you should take biochem 2B03+2BB3 (and try to go into a program that allows you to take those courses, if not, see if 2EE3 and 3G03 will substitute, I'm not sure they will), chembio 2P03, both orgos, bio 2B03 and/or 2C03 and/or 2EE3, stats 2B03 (i believe is required?). Even if people in biochem won't necessarily take all of those courses in second year, any you can take will make it easier to transfer, especially because you'll lose 6 units to 2L06 in third year.
