usb not recognized...help?
I want to throw my computer against the wall.
None of my USB ports seem to be recognizing...things that go in USB ports (i.e. my external hard drives).
I've done the take out/put back in thing which was apparently supposed to help, but no dice.
1) why does this happen
2) how can i fix it?
ugh. so annoyed.

Have you tried restarting your computer already? That usually resets everything and lets you start fresh.

Hmm. If your computer is running Vista, I suggest doing a system restore to let you work from the last saved fully-operational state your OS was in. Out of curiosity, were any new drivers/updates downloaded/installed recently?

1. turn on computer, log into windows
2. plug in USB
3. if error, take out then put back in the USB
4. still an error? could be something wrong with your drivers. any changes to your computer in the past little while?

I'm using Vista.
How on earth do I do a system restore?
And nope, no changes to computer in the last little while...except the 'e' key on my keyboard came off and I can't put it back on. (grrrrr)

Usually while starting up (right before the windows icon comes up) if you press F8, a screen will come up asking you if you want to boot into safemode. There should also be another option that says "Last Usable Configuration" or something like that. Select that option and see what happens.

On my XP, I have the same problem with my SD reader. What I do is go to Control Panel and add Hardware. I have to put the SD card in the reader before doing this.
Should be the same with the USB. Worth a shot.

It's working now?
This is frustrating. It keeps on happening off and on. And it's seemingly rotating between two of the three ports not working; one seems unaffected.
