There's a lot of video games out there with the best music. Sometimes, it's the lack of music most daunting when you play a game.
I was replaying LoZ Majora's Mask the other day, and I don't know of a single better video game song than the Song of Healing:
There's something genuinely emotionally disturbing about that whole game, even after 10 years. It just won GameFAQ's game of the 2000's decade (it came out in 2000, which says a lot about how lasting the game is).
While Zelda is great for some reasons, I think one series not to be ignored is the Metroid series... for anyone who's played Metroid Prime 1 + 2, they know exactly what I mean
And also ... Nintendo's other flagship adventure series, Donkey Kong has some pretty sweet music too.
Alright, that's all from me... what about you guys?
I'm a huge fan of VGM and think it's a severely underappreciated "genre" of music. I went to Distant Worlds in November and I enjoyed it to an indescribable extent, and I'm probably going to VG Live in April.
I have countless pieces of music I'd like to share, but a common problem I seem to find is that the enjoyment of video game music is largely due to context. I enjoy piece X because it reminds me of scene Y I played Z years ago, so it holds a place in my heart and triggers certain feelings of nostalgia. As such, if someone hasn't played the game from which the music is based, or even if they played the game but weren't affected to the same extent I was, then it might prove somewhat difficult for someone else to hear the same beauty that I do and enjoy the music.
Regardless, here are a handful of pieces that I think might be enjoyable without context.
and song of healing? c'mon song of storms or that death mountain bolero is way better.

Ocarina of Time had an absolutely amazing soundtrack, Saria's Song, Zelda's Lullaby, kokari forest theme, and the song of storms were all amazing, but the most memorable has to be the song of time:
Final Fantasy VII and X also have some of my faves:
One-Winged Angel
FFX Otherworld
FFX Battle Theme
And ofcourse, music from the most nostalgic games ever:

The Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition Package just came out and it includes a CD with all the music from all Mario games, it's pretty awesome. The composers said they only knew they were done with a song when they could listen to it hours on end without getting sick of it, since levels need to be played over and over by most players.
My absolute favourite Mario song is the castle song in Super Mario 64.
