Want to know if I can afford it
Hi,
I've been accepted in Life Science and I'd really like to attend McMaster but I want to make sure that I can afford it. Can current student, please, give me an estimate amount of the total cost for a year? I mean, everything included (tuition+rez+meal+mis c). I'd be living in Rez. I'll be taking OSAP but other than that, my external funding is limited.
Thanks in advance.

(I love this forum!! tons of info )

assuming you do a double room (not too expensive, not the cheapest either)...

around $6000 for tuition, then $3000 for the REGULAR MEAL PLAN (if you eat less...take out from this amount, a few hundred, if you eat more...add a few hundred), $5000 for the room itself...
books can cost you between $500-$1000, unless you do a lot of used (smart idea in my opinion), uhmm, then factor in your transportation (how far do you live?) and if you want to spend any extra money on the side (going out with friends, blah blah blah)

FROM THAT, take out whatever OSAP is giving you, and any scholarships you might have been awarded...and you've got the grand total

without scholarships or OSAP or blah, i'd say around 15-17k.

http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /future/financial.html kind of a useful link, the chart is pretty accurate i would say.

If external funding is limited, might be a good idea to live off-campus

My first year was about 13000 total (tuition, res, meal plan). But then I had to put more money into my meal plan about halfway through the year, and then there was the random spending (alcohol, 1280, etc.) Oh and textbooks was maybe close to 1000

Amazon is great for textbooks! I always find them sooo cheap on there, and almost always recieve free shipping (since most textbooks are over $29, which is the min. you need to spend to get free shipping).

International editions. They are usually soft cover versions, and it says international edition on it, and usually ships from asia. But yeah, pretty cheap, same content majority of the time

Highly doubt it, its like trying to find international versions of Harry Potter - we dont even see the American version much. But Amazon can ship to your house in Hamilton if you need.

Thank you all for the great tips. I'll try to save using them.
I just calculated and found that my budget will exactly be 16K. So, from your personal experience, will that amount let me pay everything and have a life (i mean, occasionally going out for drinks + misc little expenses)??
thanks again

16k will definitely be enough! Just be sure to keep track of your expenses.
