What's the first chem lab like?
I'm in chem 1a03 and my first lab is tomorrow. Was this first lab difficult? What was on it? I don't know where to go to buy a chem lab manuel. I think I went to titles but the guy there had no clue.

Soo are there any tips for this first lab? I believe it might be the titration one.

I don't think I can stress this enough, so I'll capitalize it and bold it.

GET A CHEM LAB MANUAL! They sell it at ABB. There are a lot of signs everywhere in that building.

It IS the titration one. You have a prelab to do before the lab, and you could read what's going to be on it via the manual. The whole lab's easy enough.

Ask your prof or someone in your class. It's just one of the rooms in ABB.

You need a lab notebook (the one with carbon copies that you can rip out, because you hand in your lab report at the end of each lab except for the formal one). You can get it at Titles. The labs can be printed off online.

They weren't posted online last year :S

We had to buy a lab manual from a room somewhere in ABB for ~$5.00.

They still do...
I see them selling them everyday in the hallway near the first year labs.

Make sure you buy the lab manual, and do the pre-lab...before your lab. The TA will come around marking them at the beginning. If you don't have it done pretty sure it will be 0/whatever the pre-lab marks were.

You also need a lab notebook, goggles, and lab coat. They probably have repeatedly told you this, but you have to walk into the lab room with your goggles on. You can't take your goggles off until you leave the room. Someone in my lab got in trouble for that last year...

Titration lab was good, not too difficult...good luck!!

Lab manual and lab notebook aren't the same thing...the carbon-copy lab notebook is from the bookstore, the lab manual containing instructions and prelab questions is from ABB (today they were set up outside of Jeff Landry's office).

Before your lab, you should be dressed properly (long pants, closed-toed/heeled shoes, lab coat, goggles), have your prelab done, have your lab notebook and lab manual, and have read over the procedure so you have a general idea of what to expect. All this information should be posted on avenue somewhere.

Actually, I'm not sure if they're doing that this year (although I should probably find out since I TA it ) The reason they started doing that last year (you probably remember, it only started part way through first term), is because several students were in lab, working with chemicals and not wearing goggles at all. It was a recurring problem that has the potential to be quite dangerous, so that is the reason they started not letting anyone in without wearing goggles.
