The Wild and Whacky Conservatives
This thread will explode... But I feel like I need somewhere to say what I think:

Every time an article comes out about the Conservatives, there's something obvious that the reporter seems to ignore... Usually an obviously ridiculous flip-side to the main point.

Take for example this article by CTV: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...elect ion2011

Titled:
Harper would double tax free savings to $10K per year

What does that mean to the government? Potentially less tax dollars, and therefore a smaller budget... Smaller and smaller and smaller... Harper seems to promise that Canada will run off a smaller budget every time there's an election!
Of course, the line after this title in the report says: "But this will likely happen only after the deficit is paid down in a few years".

The reduction of taxes, promised by Harper every time there's an election, is just one point that irks me about his campaigns.

There's also the case of throwing people out because of Facebook histories with the Liberals... Harper's response is to turn it around and try to make his campaign look "obviously more popular". His response to the allegations is simply, "The Liberals and NDP just don't like that I have too many people at my rallies and they have trouble filling the venues"... COME ON! REALLY? Whether or not it's true (I haven't looked into it), the fact of the matter is that Harper is discriminating and removing the tough questions from his crowd before he has to answer to them!

I realize all of this is successful politics, but it's AWFUL for the health of a democracy. There's also the constant ads, whether an election is on or not, that try to rip apart the Liberals... And the proroguing of Parliament... This isn't a healthy democracy anymore. It's a big guy doing whatever he wants, and I'm not even going to waste more time linking you to proofs of that (i.e. the convicted adviser, the contempt of parliament charge, and more)

You're stupid if you think this applies to only conservatives. All the news articles written by liberal supporters leave out the key, important details that they try to hide from us. Every plan will bite us in the butt. Liberals are saying they want to create a billion dollar support system for families and children....who do you think will pay for that? Obviously hard working people, but thats never included in articles written by CBC, or any other liberal news source. Go away, you and your liberals.

I feel like even though the Liberals and the Conservatives are two different parties, their results in parliament are both mediocre and eventually seem to cause more damage than good.

Neither Harper nor Ignatieff seem like leaders that will move this country in a positive direction; Jack Layton and the NDP's I'm fairly neutral on (although his French really irks me); Elizabeth May is pretty fierce (in a good way) which could be refreshing to Canadian politics but I haven't looked into the Green Party platform enough to set a solid opinion about them.

Has anyone heard of the Canadian Action Party (http://votecap.ca/)? They have a very interesting philosophy, one that I think definitely holds importance in modern politics. I'm curious to see how they would run the country though.

[Edit: We have our own representatives in Hamilton: clicky. Fail on the hydrofluosilicic acid, though.]

Why would you not want to pay less tax...?

Look at European countries, they pay much greater taxes but they have have better government services. I personally wouldn't care about paying more taxes for better health care and an effective government. However, I would not want to pay more for taxes if it is just going to be spent on something stupid, like campaigning or parliament wages.

Not that I think paying less tax is a negative... But it's all relative. When a leader consistently promises to lower taxes, it gets a lot of shallow thinkers to say: "Done! Voting for that person! HE'S not sticking his HAND in my pocket as deep as THAT GUY." But they don't think about all the services that the hand-in-pocket has been providing them...

I'm not going to say that Liberal media outlets don't do similar things, but these are ENORMOUS issues that the CURRENT government is doing, and has demonstrated no remorse over! Harper sees nothing wrong with his never-ending campaigning, his big campaign to change the title of "Government of Canada" to "The Harper Government" (Which is costing YOU money, btw, to redesign stamps, leterheads, etc. etc. etc) and many more excessively silly things that are simply to promote themselves using YOUR money.

Again, that's not to say the Liberals haven't used your money to do related things in the past, but lets criticize the guy that wants a promotion to Majority government here... Does he deserve the promotion?

Yes he does, Liberals are scum who don't understand that criminals belong in jail and that sexual assault is sexual assault and nothing else.

JR: And I had another young man, not a young offender, but a 19, 20 year old. He's at a party, there's a lot of sexual innuendo, one of these women is being very aggressive with her boyfriend and they're drinking a lot, the boyfriend passes out, she goes, gets into bed naked, he goes up, he's thinking he's going to be able to, that she'll probably agree to have sex with him, he fondles her privates, and she wakes up and tells him to go away, and he goes away. They report it, he's charged with sexual offence, he has digitally penetrated her, the crown prosecutor says this is a digital penetration of a woman's ******, he should go to jail for three years, that's the starting point for this sexual offence. And I'm looking at this 20 year old, socially inept young man, and his offence is a sexual assault and it's one that they consider a major sexual assault because it involves digital penetration. I don't think in those circumstances that that what happened there should put that young man in a penitentiary for three years.

Look, your response is very much a strongly Conservative opinion and it will get other strong Conservatives to go "RARA Jo87" but there are people that don't necessarily agree with your "put 'em all in jail, let 'em rot" preference. There's a flip-side to your argument: It's that jail costs money, and many offenders DO change in jail. Don't respond to this by saying "You think we shouldn't jail people because it costs money?!" because that is not what I said.

Regardless, if I may remind those readers that are just startin to read NOW, there was a lot more substance to my previous post than this "jail" example.

I'm not sure how this example justifies changing "The Canadian Government" to "The Harper Government" on all official government documents and papers, or shutting down parliament when things don't go your way, or lying to the speaker of the House...

Call me crazy though.

A lot of good points on a recent thread - you should check it out if you haven't already: http://www.macinsiders.com/showthrea...tions+com ing

Off topic: I think you were in my residence last year, Mike. Were you the guy in Les Prince who wore an underwear sash during Welcome Week? My roommate was in Engineering and insisted that it had nothing to do with the faculty despite the amount of times we tried to explain it to her. She was naive about the ways of the Engineers.

ROFL, As serious as I was trying to be about this topic, my credibility just got dumped all over Hi, nice to meet you... It's epic-ly unfortunate that I'm remembered for that. The underwear was the superfrosh sash last year, so your roommate was incorrect: IT was definitely engineering related.

Reading that other thread: I'm also noticing (but not suprised) as to how many people have come to believe that the Conservatives didn't want the elections, and they blame the Liberals and NDP for "Wasting" all of our money. As one poster said: It's democracy. "The [Supreme Commanding Rulers known as] Harper's Government" made an awful budget that less than 50% of elected representatives of Canada were supportive of (And I can't blame them for various reasons, like the government name changing, the fighter jets, and more).

So, to save us money next time, would all of the complainers prefer if the budget was just passed no matter what?

No, let's get realistic. Harper is campaigning hard core to get his Majority. Him and his government knew that chess pieces would fall into place and the board would highly favour the Conservatives if they made a poor budget that didn't pass, the opposition turned it down, and they could blame the opposition for this election that Canadian's didn't whole heartedly want. HEY LOOK! IT WORKED! If something like that played out in a movie, and everyone was slightly more omniscient, you'd call Harper's government the anti-hero.

Yeah, look at Europe. You got Ireland, Greece and numerous others in huge trouble because they don't know how to SAVE MONEY. These countries learned the hard way

I'm not sure if you're campaigning for the Liberals or the Conservative, but may I point out that the Conservatives are the ones spending like mad on fighter jets (they don't even have a clue what the final bill will be yet... American specialists are saying it's double what they're telling us) and the Liberal are the ones who setup a surplus in Canada...

In case you were going "RARA Conservative". I'm not sure how your point regarding European countries and debt is supportive of your voting direction.

In fact, when you emphasize "Save Money", you are campaigning for Liberals because they're not the ones saying "Let's reduce the intake of cash from the citizens".
