WTF Ontario just got 40 million times worse
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Politics.../15969791.html

The basic idea is that while We face the highest tuition fees in the world, Ontario and Ontario universities are giving 40,000 dollar (PER YEAR) scholarships to foreign students.

Well they argue this will bring a huge revenue to Ontario as it did last year... my reply to that is: then take the revenue from last year and use it to give the scholarships instead of taking it from our tax dollars and tuition fees (which are growing at 5% a year already).

McGuinty can eat my

Its important to note that this is a program for doctoral students (i.e. people pursuing Ph.D's) and not undergraduate students. Excellent international doctoral students have been eligible for provincial government funding in the past because bringing in the best scholars from around the world is a great way to promote innovation in the province. Doctoral students aren't really students, as much as they are hard working researchers who contribute the vast majority of the labor that goes into producing academic research in this countries. The classical picture of the professor in the lab doing research doesn't reflect the modern reality of university research. Most professors spend most of their time teaching and deal with bureaucracy related to a) getting research funding or b) the university. The real work is done by post-doctoral fellows and "students," whether they be undergraduate volunteers, master's candidates or Ph.D. candidates.

This program is an expansion of the past programs and provides an incentive for exceptional doctoral students to come to Canada. Many other countries have similar programs that fund international students to work on research.

Whether this is the best use of $30 million is something that of course can be debated, but there is significant benefit to bringing international scholars to Canada. Please also note that these students will being paying tuition on the order of $12-15000 / year to the University, so the "40k" isn't really 40k going to the student.

J-Met, macsci all say thanks to dsahota for this post.

Dalton McGuinty is a jackass. I'm a Conservative but will still back a reasonable Liberal candidate; but McGuinty is not a man I will ever support. And don't even get me started on Ignatieff...

Ontario may not have the highest tuition costs in the world, but certainly the highest in canada :\ In quebec they pay something round 2.8-3k, or so I've heard. Also I am very unimpressed with this proposition. I think the money should be spent on helping OUR current students so that they can EARN PhDs and such, or at least so that more students can afford to go to university, because THEY'RE the ones who will be contributing to ontario's economy in the future, not 7 international students.

p.s., you have it wrong btw, they're not giving any money away yet, he just announced this plan recently. but something definetly needs to be done. while we protest our butts off against rising tuition, they're doing the exact opposite over there at queen's park.

No offence intended to foreign students if any are on this forum, because it wasn't your choice in the matter -- but I don't want my tax dollars going to international students. Students who are at least permanent residents in Canada come first, with Canadian citizens taking ultimate precedence. I have a major problem with the fact that the middle-class, Canadian citizen from a non-minority get seriously shafted for both scholarships and quite often OSAP (to be more succinct, white, middle-class Canadian males).

I would assume the individuals receiving these scholarships are quite bright people, in which case I support this program. This is a prestige thing for Canada and the universities involved, no need to get your panties in a bunch because you don't understand the complex reasons why this is an overall benefit to us.

I think this would come down to how many foreign countries accept our degrees. You know how if a M.D. from India moves to Canada his/her degree is no longer valid, is the opposite true?

The majority of foreign countries accept canadian degrees. A lot of my relatives obtained there MBA's and were recruited by foreign companies immediately. Im not entirely sure about weather or not a Canadian MD could practice in a foreign country. I know that the Mcmaster MD program has links with Aga Khan University in Pakistan, so a Mcmaster MD most likely would be able to practice there.

Okay then, so many of them will probably go back to their countries of origin. But if we can get even 2 of the 10 to stay they are easily going to the worth over $400000 to the canadian economy over the course of their career, thus offsetting costs of the scholarship. Likely we'd see even more than 2 of 10 staying though. this seems like a practical long term investment to deal with the shortage of doctors.
